Pamela Ruegg, DVM, MPVM University of Wisconsin, Madison Introduction Profit centered dairy farms strive to maximize milk price and control costs. One way to control costs is by minimizing the rate of disease. The most costly disease of dairy cattle is generally considered to be mastitis. Mastitis can cause both clinical and subclinical disease. On many farms, subclinical mastitis is the most economically important type of mastitis because of the long-term effect of chronic infections on total milk yields. Persistent long-term infections with contagious pathogens (such as Strep agalactia and Staph aureus) damage milk secretory cells and result in reduced milk production. A recent study estimated that the cost of subclinical mastitis to the US dairy industry exceeds $1 billion annually. The effect of subclinical mastitis is shown in the somatic cell count (SCC) at the individual cow level and ultimately in the bulk tank. The SCC of cows infected with subclinical mastitis rises as the cows immune system sends white blood cells to the udder to fight off mastitis pathogens. The association between herd bulk tank SCC and production losses was recently compared between herds with low SCC (<200,000/ml), herds with medium SCC (200,000-399,999) and herds with high SCC (>400,000/ml), (Figure 1). The overall production loss for the average US dairy farm was estimated at $110/cow annually.

How Much Does Mastitis Cost You? The only way this question can be answered is to know how much mastitis is in your herd. Mastitis robs you in many ways: reduced milk production; treatment cost; discarded milk; death and premature culling; decreased genetic advancement; and reduced milk quality. Reduced milk production accounts for approximately 70% of the total loss associated with mastitis. U...

Mastitis is by far the most common and most costly disease in milk production in industrialised countries. Costs are related to loss in milk quality, decreased milk production related to subclinical mastitis, discarded milk, replacement cows, cost of treatment and labour costs [1]. This disease is the most frequent reason for the use of antimicrobials in dairy cows [2]. It can be classified int...
متن کاملPractical Strategies for Treating
Introduction Mastitis is the most frequent and costly disease of dairy cattle. Losses due to mastitis occur for both subclinical and clinical disease. Losses caused by clinical mastitis are often apparent and consist of discarded milk, transient reductions in milk yield and premature culling (Fetrow, 2000). Perceived financial losses for clinical mastitis vary widely. In 2002-2003, farmers part...

A variety of diagnostic tests are routinely used to evaluate milk quality on dairy farms. Tests such as bulk milk bacterial counts, bulk tank somatic cell count and tests for adulterants such as water, sediment or antibiotics are routinely used by regulatory agencies. Other tests such as individual cow somatic cell count values, Staphylococcus aureus milk antibody tests, the California Mastitis...
